Summer Day Camp Counselor - Behavioural Specialist

Reports to: Daniel O’Brien

Position Summary

The Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre is seeking a Day Camp Counselor - Behavioural Specialist to assist is providing additional care to those children with special needs enrolled in our summer day camp program.  The Day Camp Counselor - Behavioral Specialist will work with the Day Camp Counselor team and the Camp Coordinator to supervise and manage potential behavioural situations that arise during the course of the summer.

Dates:  June 25th – August 24th 2018

Duties and Responsibilities

  • · Assess children’s behaviour and ensure child’s files are updated and checked regularly
  • · Manage all minor and major behavioural incidents as they occur
  • · Documentation of incidents that have happened
  • · Provide positive leadership and training to staff on how to deal with behaviour issues
  • · Provide quality adaptive programming to meet the needs and expectations of campers with special needs and their families
  • · Provide a safe and positive environment at all times
  • · Ensure effective communication with parents, guardians, staff, volunteers and children are met
  • · Generate an environment of excellence where campers can learn, develop skills, and make new friends
  • · Role model appropriate leadership skills and behaviours to all staff, including our younger volunteer counsellors so they may grow into our future day camp staff

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • · Knowledge and understanding of behaviour management techniques
  • · Experience in providing leadership in a camp environment preferred
  • · Experience working with children with special needs preferred
  • · Secondary education such as Education, Psychology, Education Assistant, or Child & Youth Care Counselling are preferred
  • · Currently enrolled in post-secondary education
  • · Criminal record check including a vulnerable sector search
  • · Current CPR-C and first aid
  • · Current child abuse registry letter

Other Qualifications

  • · Possess a positive attitude, self-motivated, adaptable and flexible, appreciative of diversity
  • · Strong planning and organizational skills
  • · The ability to work within a team
  • · Well-developed communication and conflict resolution skills
  • · Ability to ice skate and swim an asset
  • · Valid driver’s license an asset
  • · Ability to speak French an asset
  • · Candidates should be prepared for physical labour of lifting, moving (chairs/tables etc.) and lots of walking (very active job)
