FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Please join us at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre Thursday, October 6, at 11 a.m. as we announce the 2022 Para Hockey Cup returning to Lunenburg County. This four-team Hockey Canada international tournament will be taking place November 27 to December 3, 2022.

The Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre is incredibly excited to be hosting the Hockey Canada Para Hockey Cup again in 2022. We had so much support from the community in 2016 when we first hosted this event, and we are thrilled to build off of that momentum.

This four-team event will feature Team Canada, Italy, Czechia, and the USA. This represents a unique opportunity for fans to cheer on Team Canada as they take on the best Para Hockey competition in the world.

The spin off associated with this event will include a $15,000 legacy plan that will be allocated to Developing existing programs, developing new programs, junior development camps and High Performance team assistance. As well as the awareness and support this caliber of event fosters in our community and across the province.

Along with the social benefits to hosting, we know that the 2016 event accounted for over $900,000 in economic activity in the province, of which $600,000 occurred in and around Bridgewater. There is also an immeasurable value for the fans and over 100 volunteers who come together to put out east coast hospitality on display for all to see.

“We are incredibly proud that Hockey Canada has chosen to come to the LCLC and to Lunenburg County once again,” said Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, mayor of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg. “It is an honor to be selected and it speaks volumes about the kind of event we were able to put on in 2016 and the support the tournament received from our community.”

“Not only are we going to see tremendous para hockey on the ice, but this is the kind of event that has a significant impact on our community as a whole,” said Bridgewater Mayor David Mitchell. “The economic impact of hosting the 2022 Para Hockey Cup is estimated at more than $1 million and Hockey Canada also makes a legacy contribution, giving back a portion of net proceeds to local minor and para hockey programs here.”

“We are honoured to have this prestigious event returning to our community and once again to have the opportunity to welcome the world to Lunenburg County, and excited to have the world’s elite players take to the ice for the 2022 Para Hockey Cup,” said Kent Walsh, co-chair of the Para Hockey Cup host committee. “We are grateful for the opportunity to showcase our community and we want to ensure that our fans will keep great memories of this event.”

This will be the third Hockey Canada event Bridgewater has hosted in recent years – in addition to the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge, the community also welcomed the Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, in 2018.
